Manic Depression

December 1st, 2008

Bi-Polar disorder is another moniker for manic depression. Bi-Polar people exhibit sudden changes from a very good mood to a very bad mood. This is a type of depression. Sadness over an event isn’t manic depression. Manic depression is far more sinister. Another stage of depression is the diagnosis for bi-polar disorder. In America millions of people each year are told they are afflicted with manic depression. Typically, some type of depression yearly affects around 17 million Americans.

Unfortunately only about1/3 of those will be diagnosed and receive help. Nothing can be cured if the victim doesn’t go for help. Mental illness is a red stop sign for many Americans, they don’t want to deal with it. They do not want to be stereotyped as one who must be out of their mind. Diseases that affect the brain have always been very complicated. It is hard to shake the stigma that comes with the diagnosis. But having this disease isn’t a sign of personal weakness. You’re not crazy. This is a disease like any other. If it’s identified it can be cured.

Medicine is still looking for all the causes of depression. There are many factors that bring on depression. It’s well known that consideration must be given to chemical factors, a person’s surroundings, and even their genes. We know that it seems to be caused by a chemical imbalance on the brain. Depression is also brought about by stress. Life is full of stress. It can be problems at work, in our relationships with those we love or facing the reality of trying to survive week to week. Depression knows no bounds. It can affect the rich and the poor. It is not racist. Color or nationality provide no protection from this illness.

There are similar symptoms no matter the type of depression. Dramatic shifts in personality and up and down mood swings are some. The advent of sleeplessness is another sign of depression. Helpless feelings, or feelings that the future holds no hope are signs. When everyday life becomes a chore, that’s depression. But the depression afflicted have hope. There is assistance. There are medicines both prescribed and natural that can offer a cure. Psychotherapy can also help. Support groups can also be helpful for those with manic depression. There can’t be a cure until help is sought.
