Grapefruit Diet
One of the popular fad diets in Hollywood was the grapefruit diet. It first came to fame in the 1930′s when many stars used it. It became part of xerox lore, faxed from machine to machine, in the 1970′s. The diet has been described as bad by the Mayo Clinic, often associated with the diet.
The grapefruit diet is a lot like Atkins, but with a grapefruit eaten with each meal. The diet only allows three meals each day, with no snacking in between meals. The diet claimed that people could lose 10 pounds in 10 days, or 5 pounds in five days. The distribution was just as far fetched – no weight loss for four days then five pounds lost all on the fifth day. Supposedly grapefruit contains enzymes that destroy fat, but no study has ever proven that to be true.
In 2004 it was proven that the diet may work. 1/2 grapefruit with each meal helped people lose 3.6 pounds in only 12 weeks. Those who drank the serving of grapefruit juice at each meal lost just slightly less weight in the same period of time. Many of the participants lost more than 10 pounds in 12 weeks. The doctor who conducted the study found that the grapefruit diet seems to reduce levels of insulin. However, all the participants slightly enhanced their exercise programs, which may account for the lost weight.
Here’s a typical grapefruit diet:
- Drink eight servings of water a day.
- Eat only until you are full at each meal.
- Eat every item of food listed for each meal because the menus are formulated to burn fat.
- The catalyst t the whole process is grapefruit, so don’t cut it.
- Try to avoid coffee, but if drunk consume only three cups a day.
- No snacking.
- Butter can be used.
- Do not eat desserts, breads, white vegetables, or sweet potatoes.
- Meat and vegetables are fine.
- Eating more will actually result in more weight loss.
- Follow the diet 12 days on, 2 days off, 12 days on etc.
- Grapefruit comes before every meal – S fruit or 18 ounces of the juice.
