A Young Man Makes an Appointment to See His Family Physician About His Depression and His Alcohol Difficulties

September 27th, 2009

Denny is a fifteen-year-old adolescent who has at long last finally decided to go and see his family healthcare practitioner about his careless and hazardous drinking. At first, Denny thought he would be able to basically go on the world wide web, look for some basic alcohol info and determine whether or not he was an alcoholic.

Not unexpectedly, he found several websites that highlighted some of the well-known alcoholism symptoms. That’s the encouraging news. The less than encouraging news, sadly, was that Denny showed evidence of quite a few of these alcoholism symptoms.

Alcoholism Symptoms: Some Examples

As an illustration, Denny has been drinking increasingly more than customary and he has started to have more fiery disagreements with his girlfriend. Additionally, for the first time in his young life he has been encountering sleeping issues. If this wasn’t enough, Denny often has felt depressed and on an ever increasing basis he has been manifesting poor attention to detail in class. Moreover, he has felt highly stressed and more on edge on a day-to-day basis and for the past few months he has displayed foggy thinking in the classroom. Due to the fact that Denny has been manifesting all of these symptoms, he was justifiably concerned about his hazardous and excessive drinking.

So Denny eventually made up his mind that he needed to place a phone call to his healthcare professional and ask for an appointment. In point of fact, this was challenging for Denny because his family healthcare practitioner was also his parents’ healthcare practitioner. The root of his worry was this: at the risk of embarrassing his family, he had to go and divulge his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior to his family doctor.

When Denny arrived at the doctor’s office, he candidly told the doctor about the apprehension he has about his irresponsible drinking behavior. When the physician asked what was triggering this worry, Denny said that he had gone online and read about alcohol addiction and especially about alcohol addiction symptoms. He then listed all of the alcohol dependency symptoms that he undeniably thought he has.

A Thoroughgoing Physical Assessment and Outpatient Alcohol Treatment

The healthcare practitioner informed Denny that it was smart of him to concentrate on his problem drinking, he gave Denny a complete physical exam, and suggested that he talk to his parents about registering in an out-patient alcohol rehabilitation center that was run by Doctor Clark, one of his doctor accomplices who is an alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction specialist.

In addition, when Denny expressed the fact that he has been feeling depressed to an increasing degree, the family doctor told Denny that depression and alcoholism on a fairly regular basis come about in the same person. Accordingly, the family doctor also suggested that Denny talk to his parents about getting counseling in order to concentrate on his depression. In fact, Denny can go to the local mental health facility and make an appointment with Doctor Thomas, a well known psychologist who specializes in treating teenagers.

The Value of Coming To Grips With Your Drinking Problems and Getting Motivated About Making Healthy and Positive Changes in Your Life

The doctor made it a point to notify Denny that he might not necessarily be alcohol dependent, but that he was unmistakably drinking in an abusive manner. Stated more precisely, Denny was engaging in teen alcohol abuse. The physician then told Denny that the reason he recommended alcohol rehabilitation in the first place was because he wanted him to face up to his drinking difficulties, make sure that he prevented them from going from bad to worse, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to absolutely quit drinking.

When all’s said and done, by productively treating his drinking problems, Denny would be able to get his drinking issues under control and refrain from the negative sequence of events that could in all probability lead to addiction to alcohol.

Denny justifiably did not look forward to facing his Mother and Father about his depression and his drinking issues. And he undoubtedly did not want to face the thought of enrolling in an alcohol rehab program. And lastly, he was not ecstatic about going to a therapist about his sense of gloom. Irrespective of these trepidations, however, Denny in actual fact experienced some psychological relief for the first time in many months because he ultimately gave up making excuses for himself and decided to do something positive about his excessive and careless drinking.
